Conclusion
People from ethnic minority groups are still strongly
underrepresented within the academic world (Hofstra et al., 2022).
However, only little research is done on how ethnicity precisely plays a
role in the formation of co-authorship networks within science (Horta,
Feng & Santos, 2022). Most studies on co-authorship networks are
very large scaled, neglecting the micro-level characteristics that could
be of influence (Pepe & Rodriguez, 2009) and do not study the social
sciences (Horta, Feng & Santos, 2022).This study is the first to
examine in detail the formation of co-authorship ties within a
department, looking at the influence of the percentage of non-Dutch
co-authors in one’s collaboration network. The analysis was performed on
the sociology department of Radboud University and the sociology
department of Utrecht University.
First, the study aimed to compare the sociology departments in their
share of non-Dutch staff members and their percentage of non-Dutch
co-authors within the staff members collaboration networks. Ethnicity
was operationalized as Dutch or non-Dutch, based on the last name of the
scholar. As expected, Utrecht University was more ethnically diverse
than Radboud University: the department contained both more staff
members with a non-Dutch last name and had a higher percentage of
non-Dutch co-authors in the collaborator networks of the staff members.
This might be explained by the fact that Utrecht is a bigger city and
has a higher percentage of inhabitants with a migration background.
Second, the paper tried to explain the percentage of non-Dutch
co-authors present within one’s collaboration network by performing
regression analyses. We were interested in several demographic
characteristics: ethnicity, age and gender. The influence of the
characteristics differed between the two universities. For Radboud
University only the academical age of a staff member was of significant
influence: the younger the scholar, the higher the percentage of
non-Dutch co-authors within their collaboration network. For Utrecht
University, only the ethnicity of the ego had a significant effect:
non-Dutch staff members were more likely to have a higher percentage of
non-Dutch co-authors in their collaboration network.
Third, with the use of RSiena we could estimate the influence of the
percentage of non-Dutch co-authors within one’s collaboration network on
the formation of ties within the departments, while controlling for both
structural effects as other relevant factors. The structural effects
seem to have more influence in the sociology department of the Radboud
University than in the department of Utrecht University. Sociologists at
the RU significantly preferred to co-publish with a co-author of a
co-author.
Furthermore, the control variables did not have a big influence on
the attractiveness of the formation of a co-authorship tie. For RU,
scholars preferred to co-publish with someone who was of younger age.
For UU, none of the control variables had a significant effect.
Apparently, these individual level characteristics were not important in
the scholars decision with whom to co-publish. However, these findings
should be treated with caution as the density within both departments
was very low, especially for UU.
Most importantly, we saw that the percentage of non-Dutch co-authors
was indeed of influence in scholars’ choice to co-publish or not.
Generally, the RSiena results indicate that sociologists prefer to
co-publish with someone who has a similar percentage of non-Dutch
co-authors in their network. However, this effect became slightly
insignificant for UU when all the variables were added in the last
model. However, generally our findings are in line with our expectations
based on the homophily principle: people are more likely to associate
with people who are similar to them (Lazersfeld & Merton, 1954;
McPherson, Smith-Lovin & Cook, 2001). For instance, people with
similar shares of non-Dutch collaborators might have certain attitudes
or values in common that could lead them to co-publish together.
Limitations and future
research
Whilst this paper adds to the scientific literature because it is
the first to study this research question, some limitations have to be
mentioned. First, several remarks can be made about the
operationalization of our variables. Ethnicity is operationalized by
looking at the last name of the scholar. Whilst I tried to do this very
precisely, this method is sensitive to mistakes as not all last names
give away someones ethnical background. Therefore, it could be possible
that some of the scholars were classified in the wrong group.
Furthermore, dividing ethnicity into Dutch/non-Dutch is over-simplified
and possibly problematic. Studies show that people with a non-Western
migration background are victim of discrimination much more often than
people with a western migration background (SCP, 2020). In this study,
scholars from German origin were for instance also labeled as non-Dutch,
whilst they might not have experienced any adverse consequences of their
ethnicity. This might have influenced our findings, resulting in a
stronger effect of the percentage of non-Dutch collaboration within
one’s network than is actually present. Therefore I highly encourage
future research to examine if our results are still true using a more
reliable and precise method of deciding one’s ethnicity.
Furthermore, because of a lack of time we solely looked at ego’s
collaborators since 2019 in deciding the percentage of non-Dutch
collaborators in one’s network. In contrast, the RSiena analysis is
focused on collaboration ties in the period 2016-2022. Therefore, we
implicitly assume that the percentage of non-Dutch collaborators within
one’s network is relatively stable over time. However, as someone will
probably change their co-author ship ties during their academical
career, this assumption might be false. Therefore, future research
should decide the level of ethnic diversity of collaborator networks
using a broader period of time.
Second, also the structure of our chosen network could have
influenced the results of our study. The densitity of both the networks
was relatively low, especially the density of network of Utrecht
University. This might have skewed our results, as only little
co-authorship ties were made within the department. This could explain
why the control variables in the RSiena analysis were of non-significant
influence.
Furthermore, our network is undirected as google scholar only
contains information on collaborations on papers, but not who initiated
this relationship. If future research could study the formation of
co-authorship ties within a directed network, then more could be said
about the motivations of scholars who co-publish with each other: who
initiated the relationship and why?
An important point of reflection is the ethical issues that arised
while conducting this research. First, names and information of the
scholars were webscraped from the universities’ websites and google
scholar, without permission. During this process, we often got a “rate
limit” error from google, which we had to ignore by changing our code.
Future research could webscrape more ethnically, by introducing
themselves politely to the server every time. However, for our short
project this was too time-consuming. Second, the scholars never gave
permission to be included in the research. However, they did voluntary
put their names and information openly on google scholar and the
universities’ websites. Last, we divided the scholars in groups based on
their ethnicity, which we decided ourselves based on their last name.
This is of course a sensitive topic: especially because we made this
very over-simplified categorization of Dutch and non-Dutch. This could
be considered as non-ethical: it is based on a very Western perspective,
putting all other ethnicities than “Dutch” under the same umbrella.
Furthermore, having a non-Dutch last name or having a non-Dutch
ethnicity does of course not mean that this person is not Dutch. Making
this distinction can lead to the idea that Dutch people with a migration
background are not really Dutch, which of course is not the case.
