Theory
First, this paper will perform a descriptive analysis and comparison
of the co-authorship networks within the sociology departments of
Radboud University and Utrecht University. We are mainly interested in
the differences between the two departments regarding the ethnicity of
the sociologists themselves and the percentage of non-Dutch co-authors
within their collaborator networks.
In Nijmegen 26.5 percent of the inhabitants has a migration
background, of whom 12.1 percent Western and 14.4 percent non-Western
(CBS, 2022). For Utrecht, this 36.1 percent (12.2 percent Western and
23.9 percent non-Western). As the population of Utrecht is more
ethnically diverse than the population of Nijmegen, I expect this will
also influence the level of ethnic diversity of their staff members and
of the co-authorship networks present for multiple reasons. First,
because Utrecht is a more ethnically diverse city than Nijmegen and a
university is an important part of a city, I expect UU to also be more
ethnically diverse than RU. Following the homophily theory, people want
to associate with people who have similar characteristics (Lazersfeld
& Merton, 1954; McPherson, Smith-Lovin & Cook, 2001). Studies
indeed show that scientific collaboration networks are clustered by
ethnicity, as people prefer to co-publish with people from similar
ethnic background (Freeman & Huang, 2014; Kumar & Ratnavelu,
2015). Therefore, as UU has a higher percentage of non-Dutch
sociologists than RU, I expect this multiculturality to also be visible
within the collaboration networks of the scholars.
Second, large cities are generally more internationally orientated
than smaller cities (Wood, 2001), which could result in Utrecht
University hiring more staff from non-Dutch origin than Radboud
University and being more open for co-publishing with people from ethnic
minority groups. This can be the result of bigger cities multicultural
character, which does not only result in the presence of more ethnic
minorities with an international worldview, but also in ethnic majority
inhabitants coming into contact with many people from ethnic minority
groups. Following the contact theory, this will lead to less negative
prejudices regarding outgroups (Pettigrew, 1998), hence explaining their
more internationally orientated nature. Another explanation for the
international nature of bigger cities, is the larger presence of big
companies who need to have international ties to keep up with
competition (Wood, 2001). Therefore, we formulate the following
hypotheses:
Hypothesis 1a: Utrecht University has a higher
percentage of non-Dutch sociology staff members than Radboud
University.
Hypothesis 1b: The collaborator egonets of
sociology staff members from Utrecht University will contain a higher
percentage of non-Dutch co-authors than the collaborator egonets of
sociology staff members from Radboud University.
Furthermore, I expect that a scholar’s ethnic background, age and
gender will influence the percentage of non-Dutch co-authors present
within their collaboration network.
First, as explained before, the homophily theory states that
individuals want to form relationships with people who have similar
traits and values (Horta, Feng & Santos, 2022; Lazersfeld &
Merton, 1954; McPherson, Smith-Lovin & Cook, 2001). Race and
ethnicity play a mayor role in the division of social networks within
society (McPherson, Smith-Lovin & Cook, 2001). Studies indeed show
that scholars of the same ethnicity are more likely to collaborate
together (Freeman & Huang, 2014; Kumar & Ratnavelu, 2015).
Therefore we expect:
Hypothesis 2a: Non-Dutch sociology staff members
will have a higher percentage of non-Dutch co-authors within their
collaborator egonets than Dutch sociology staff members.
Furthermore, age seems to be of influence on people’s perceptions on
ethnic minorities. Studies show that persons of older age are less
tolerant towards ethnic minority groups, especially Muslims (Dunn,
2003). This can be explained by cohort replacement: attitudes are formed
during the socialization in someone’s formative years and this is
resistant to changes in their later life (Alwinn & Scott, 1996;
Glenn, 1977). Each cohort has unique social-political orientations, as
their circumstances differed during their socialization period. As
people of colour were portrayed more negatively in the distant past,
older people are more likely to have negative prejudices regarding
ethnic minorities (Gonsalkorale, Sherman & Klauer, 2009). Therefore,
I expect that older scholars will be less open to collaborate with
people with a migration background than younger scholars. This leads us
to the following hypothesis:
Hypothesis 2b: Younger sociology staff members
will have a higher percentage of non-Dutch co-authors within their
collaborator egonets than older sociology staff members.
The last demographic characteristic included in the study is gender.
Gender stereotypes can be of influence on racial prejudices (Ford, 2008;
Leong & Ward, 2006). Females are generally encouraged to behave
according to gender norms that value warmth, compassion, nurturance and
interpersonal orientation. These values are related to more tolerant
view towards ethnic minorities. In contrast, men are socialized with
ideas of masculinity that encourage competitiveness, dominance and
achievement, which could lead to more hostile views towards outgroups.
Therefore, I expect that female scholars will be more likely to
collaborate with ethnic minority scholars than male scholars.
Hypothesis 2c: Female sociology staff members
will have a higher percentage of non-Dutch co-authors within their
collaborator egonets than male sociology staff members.
Last, this paper will examine to what extent the percentage of
non-Dutch co-authors present within the collaborator egonets will
influence whether staff within the department work together.
The diversity-innovation paradox shows that a higher level of
diversity within a co-publishing group can lead to more innovative ideas
(Hofstra et al., 2020). People from minority groups have experiences
that have often been neglected within science. However, studies show
that papers published by members of (ethnic) minority groups are taken
up less by other scholars than papers published by members of (ethnic)
majority groups, as is visible in the number of publications and
citations (Hofstra et al. 2020; Ginther et al. 2018). Because of the
negative effect of being part of an ethnic minority group on your
academical success, it can be expected that scholars will be more
attracted to form ties with colleagues with a homogeneous Dutch
collaboration network than with colleagues who have a network with a
higher percentage of non-Dutch scholars. Therefore, we could formulate
the following hypothesis:
Hypothesis 3a Sociology staff members prefer to
co-publish with scholars that have a low percentage of non-Dutch
co-authors within their collaboration egonet.
In contrast, other studies show that papers from international
collaborations have a greater scientific impact than those from domestic
papers (Velez-Estevez, García-Sánchez, Moral-Munoz & Cobo, 2022).
Following this logic, it might be more attractive for staff members to
collaborate with colleagues who many international scholars within their
collaboration network, who are often persons with a non-Dutch last name.
Therefore one could also expect:
Hypothesis 3b Sociology staff members prefer to
co-publish with scholars that have a high percentage of non-Dutch
co-authors within their collaboration egonet.
Last, when following the homophily principle, people are more likely
to form ties with persons that have similar characteristics (Horta, Feng
& Santos, 2022; Lazersfeld & Merton, 1954; McPherson,
Smith-Lovin & Cook, 2001). One could therefore also hypothesize that
scholars with a similar amount of ethnic diversity within their
co-authorship network are more likely to co-publish together, as they
might have attitudes and values that are more alike. Based on the
homophily principle, we formulate our last hypothesis:
Hypothesis 3c Sociology staff members prefer to
co-publish with scholars that have a similar percentage of non-Dutch
co-authors within their collaboration egonet.
