Introduction
Due to rising globalization, the academic world is increasing in its
level of ethnic diversity (Freeman & Huang, 2014). However, the pace
of this shift is slow and primarily contains an increase in Asian people
obtaining higher education and entering the academic world (Hofstra et
al., 2022). Most ethnic minority groups are still strongly
underrepresented: in the United States in 2018, 10.6 percent of the
scholars had an Asian background and only 7.8 percent was from another
ethnic minority group (NCES 1995, 2003, 2014, 2019). This lack of
diversity is also visible at universities in the Netherlands, especially
regarding their staff members (Bettache, 2019). From all students that
obtained their master’s degree in 2018, 15.34 had a non-Western
migration background (Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, 2020).
This is comparable with the 14.7 percent of the Dutch society with a
non-Western migration background (CBS, 2022). However, less is known
about the ethnic composition of the staff members at Dutch universities
as it is illegal to register the ethnicity of employees (Ministry of
Education, Culture and Science, 2020). A study shows that approximately
25 percent of the research assistants at the University of Groningen has
a non-Western migration background (White, 2016). However, only 12 of
the 469 professors have a non-Western background. This suggests that a
leaky pipeline might be present (Hofstra et a;., 2022): the number of
persons with a migration background obtaining a master’s degree is
relatively high, but this does not translate into ethnic minorities
obtaining a career in the field of science.
One possible explanation for the lack of ethnic diversity within
science, could be the existence of biases and discrimination (Beasley
& Fischer, 2011). Within science especially white middle-aged men
are seen as scientifically competent, which is detrimental for aspiring
scientists of minority groups (Moss-Racusin et al., 2014). Indeed,
studies find that people from minority groups often do not feel included
within academia and therefore choose to not maintain their careers
within the scientific world (Beasley & Fischer, 2012). Furthermore,
studies suggest that ethnic discrimination is visible in the hiring of
academic employees, but also within their promotion (Abelson et al.,
2018), the funding of awards and grants and the number of publications
and citations (Ginther et al. 2018).
Many studies have looked at the effect of gender in the formation of
scientific collaboration, but the role ethnicity plays within these
networks remains understudied (Bertolero et al., 2020). A study on the
ethnic imbalance in reference lists of neuroscience found many
similarities with research on gender inequality within academia
(Bertolero et al., 2020). Just like female scholars whose under-citation
was mostly driven by men (McLaughlin, Lange & Brus, 2013), ethnic
minority scholars were cited less and this was largely caused by the
ethnic majority.
Moreover, research on ethnic discrimination in the formation of
co-authorship networks is scarce as most studies are focused on
reference lists and citation scores (Horta, Feng & Santos, 2022).
This is remarkable, as co-authorship on scientific papers is most
evident and furthermore most well suited for quantification of
scientific activities (Beaver & Rosen, 1978 & Nagtegaal & de
Bruin, 1994).
Furthermore, especially little research is done on the role of
ethnicity in the formation of co-authorship within the social sciences
(Horta, Feng & Santos, 2022). It is of great importance to examine
the level of ethnic diversity of social science departments and their
collaboration networks, as their research often includes topics like
ethnic discrimination. Scholars from minority groups have unique
experiences that are different from the white and western perspectives
of the majority groups that have been dominant within science, which
could lead to more scientific innovation (Hofstra et al., 2020).
Therefore, the voices of ethnic minorities should be included in
conducting social science studies, especially as they have experienced
the discriminatory practices that we study.
Moreover, research on scientific collaboration networks is mostly
focused on large social networks, neglecting the microlevel factors that
could be of influence on the formation of co-authorship ties (Pepe &
Rodriguez, 2009). This study will examine and compare the collaboration
networks of two Dutch sociology departments, one at Radboud University
and one at Utrecht University, allowing us to closely observe the
characteristics that play a significant role in the formation of
co-authorship networks. We obtain our own dataframe by webscraping
information about the scholars and their publications and citations from
the university’s websites and google scholar.
First, the social networks of the departments will be compared
descriptively regarding the ethnicities present: both looking at the
ethnicity of the staff members and the ethnicities within the
collaboration networks of these staff members. These universities were
chosen, because one is located in a relatively small city (Nijmegen) and
the other in a relatively large city (Utrecht), who differ strongly in
their percentage of inhabitants having a migration background (CBS,
2022). We are therefore interested to what extent (the networks of)
these two departments differ regarding their level of ethnic diversity.*
This leads us to the following research questions:
Question 1a: To what extent do the sociology
departments from Radboud University and Utrecht University differ in
their percentage of non-Dutch staff members?
Question 1b: To what extent do the collaborator
egonets of sociology staff members from Radboud University and Utrecht
University differ in their percentage of non-Dutch co-authors?
Second, this paper examine to what extent different demographic
characteristics can explain the level of ethnic diversity within
scholars co-authorship networks. First, we observe that race and
ethnicity are of big influence in the formation of social relationships
(McPherson, Smith-Lovin & Cook, 2001) as people often feel connected
to people that are similar to themselves (Lazersfeld & Merton,
1954). This might also be the case in the formation of ties within the
sociology departments, as studies show that scholars of the same
ethnicity are more likely to collaborate with each other (Freeman &
Huang, 2014; Kumar & Ratnavelu, 2015). Another factor that could be
associated to the prevalence of ethnic minorities within one’s
collaboration network, is age. Generally, people of older age are less
tolerant towards ethnic minority groups, especially Muslims (Dunn, 2003;
Gonsalkorale, Sherman & Klauer, 2009). Furthermore, the gender of
the scholar could also be of influence on the level of non-Dutch
collaborators present in their co-authorship network. Studies show that
masculinity is related to more negative attitudes towards ethnic
minorities and multiculturalism (Dunn, 2003; Leon & Ward, 2006),
what might be of influence on the formation of co-authorship ties within
academia. Therefore, this paper aims to answer the following research
question:
Question 2: To what extent can we explain these
differences in the percentage of non-Dutch co-authors within the
collaborator egonets by ethnic background, age and gender of these
faculty members?
Last, studies show that a higher level of ethnic diversity within a
collaboration network can lead to more scientific novelty, as people
from minority groups bring experiences and perspectives to the table
that have generally been neglected within science (Hofstra et al.,
2020). At the same time, these innovative papers published by more
ethnically diverse scholars are taken up less by other scholars than
papers published by members of the ethnic majority. We are therefore
interested in how the percentage of non-Dutch co-authors within a
scholar’s network influences to what extent their colleagues want to
collaborate with them.
This last question will be answered using Stochastic Actor-Orientated
Modelling (SOAM) of RSiena (Ripley et al., 2022), studying the influence
of the percentage of non-Dutch co-authors within ones collaborator
network on scholar’s decisions to form co-authorship ties with other
within the department. SOAM-analysis is unique because it allows us to
examine this influence whilst at the same time controlling for
structural network effects and other factors that could be of influence.
It is of great importance to control for structural network effects, as
studies have shown that they are of significant influence on the
formation of co-authorship networks (Barabási et al., 2002; Newman,
2001). Generally, scholars are more likely to collaborate when they have
a co-author in common and prefer to collaborate with scholars with many
collaboration ties. Furthermore, research shows that homophily is
visible within scientific collaboration networks, resulting in the
clustering of scholars that have similar characteristisc (Wang,
Zhen-Zhen & Zhu, 2014). However, this is the first study to date to
examine the influence of the level of ethnic diversity of collaborator
networks for scholars’ choices whether or not to co-publish. This leads
us to our last research question:
Question 3: To what extent does the percentage
of non-Dutch co-authors within the collaborator egonets influence
whether staff within the department work together?
- Disclaimer: the ethnicity of the scholars is operationalized by
looking at the last name of the scholar, classifying them as Dutch or
non-Dutch for ease of interpretation. This does of course not mean that
a scholar who is classified as non-Dutch cannot have a Dutch
nationality.
